So what’s so special about cabin beds anyway?

Well, probably the most appealing feature a cabin bed has to offer is heaps of extra storage space under it. Usually there are drawers with clothes underneath the bed or shelves for toys and books, but I have also seen pull out desks being attached. When in use it pulls out and your child can sit next to it and write, draw or whatever the wish is and when finished, you simply push the desk back.

The other fun feature of cabin beds is the magical world you can create for children. The most popular designs for girls are pink princess beds and for boys pirate ships and castles. But the most important thing is that you don’t have to decide whether your child will have a practical cabin bed with lots of space for drawers and shelves or a more fun design mentioned above. Nope, you can combine both features and have both fun and good use of space.

After all, the most important thing is that your child feels comfortable in his room and if you can add some functionality to it all – well, that’s what’s so special about cabin beds

My name is Matthew and I’m from Bristol, England. I’m 10 years old and have just recently gotten my very first pirate children cabin bed. It was a birthday gift from my parents and it was perfect. Is’ shaped like a pirate ship and has windows painted on the side drawers. It even has a large parrot attached to the leg-side part of the frame. Sometimes I like to take the drawers out so I have space underneath the bed so I can pretend to be a real pirate.

Considering I have many children and therefore many cabin beds, we have become experts on how to decorate them. The cabin bed that first belonged to my oldest son is now not really in a condition to be used anymore, but I still remember that he decorated it in a castle like style with a moat and a bridge drawed on the side of the bed.

After him it seems all my kids developed artistic skills by learning to draw and paint on their cabin beds.

A nice way to decorate those dull looking cabin beds is using stencil. You can buy them at most furniture and even hardware stores. There aren’t any made only for beds (at least I haven’t seen one yet ), but those meant for walls can easily be used. You can also make stencils yourself by cutting a desired shape out of a large piece of cardboard or firm paper. After you acquired your stencil simply attach it to the side of the cabin bed and spray or paint  the desired color over the stencil, leaving a stencil shape on the frame. Make sure you use children friendly colours that don’t contain any hazardous chemicals.
